YSRH visits many different places across the counties we cover each week to deal with rescue calls from members of the public and to check over the swans and other water birds there to make sure that there are no sick or injured ones going un-noticed. Here are some of the places we check and rescue from on a regular basis:
Castleford, West Yorkshire
There are several hundred swans around the small town of Castleford. Many of these reside on the Fairburn Ings Nature Reserve where there can be as many as two hundred swans at any one time. This is a large non-breeding (single swan) flock where many swans live until they pick up a mate and move off elsewhere to breed. There are several ponds and lakes in the area such as the one at Allerton Bywater where pairs of swans live and have cygnets each year. There are also many swans on the rivers and streams in the area. There are also ducks, black swans, geese, coots, moorhens and many other types of bird in the area.
Roundhay Park, Leeds, West Yorkshire
Many swans and birds live on the huge man made lake at Roundhay Park. This is where YSRH rescued our first swan in Yorkshire; he was the victim of a dog attack. Part of the park also has black swans.
Yeadon Tarn, Yeadon, West Yorkshire
There is a large boating lake here where many single swans and other waterfowl live.
Rother Valley Country Park, Rotherham, South Yorkshire
There is a large flock of non-breeding (single) swans and there can be as many as 100 here at any time. Again, the swans live here until they find a mate and fly off elsewhere to breed. The park rangers are very good at reporting sick and injured swans to us and they have been kind enough to let us have fundraising and information display events in the park. There are also ducks, geese, coots, moorhens and many other types of bird.
Whitby Harbour, North Yorkshire
The Harbour at Whitby is home to several swans who come in down the river Esk, the harbour is the last stop before they would reach the sea. There are also ducks, geese and of course seagulls!
Pontefract Park Lake, Pontefract, West Yorkshire
There is a pair of swans living here who breed every year and have several cygnets. There are also ducks, geese and other types of bird living on the lake.
Pugneys Country Park, Wakefield, West Yorkshire
Here there is a large non-breeding flock of swans as well as many geese, ducks and others. There can be as many as 100 swans here at any time.
Sawley, Nottinghamshire
We have had several rescue calls for swans on the River Trent at Sawley by the Marina. Here there can be anything from 10 to 50 single swans in the flock. There are many pairs of swans on the rivers and canals nearby.
University of York, North Yorkshire
On the lakes at the University there are many wild and non-wild birds. We have been called out to rescue the black swans and to check over various ducks who have appeared to be unwell.
Doncaster Dome, South Yorkshire
Here anything up to 100 swans live on one of the large man made lakes on the out of town Business Park. This is a non-breeding flock and there are several pairs of swans on the lakes, ponds and river in the area. If you know of any places in Yorkshire and the surrounding counties with swans please contact us and let us know
